Odoo, ERPNext and SAP Business One are three different answers to the same problem, and they differ most in how they are licensed, how they are sold and who implements them. Odoo splits into a free Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition. ERPNext is open source. SAP Business One is proprietary software that SAP positions for small and midsize businesses. None is best for every company, so this guide compares them on documented facts and ends with a way to decide. DevMarket sells Odoo modules, among other things, so we have an interest in Odoo, and we have kept to what the vendors publish.
In short
Openness: Odoo Community is LGPL v3 and Enterprise has a proprietary licence with shared source. ERPNext is GPL-3.0. SAP Business One is proprietary.
Cost model: Odoo Enterprise is per user per month. ERPNext software is free, and its cloud hosting is priced by use. SAP Business One is typically quoted by SAP partners.
Saudi Arabia: Odoo documents a Saudi localisation and a ZATCA module, ERPNext documents a KSA VAT report and lists a separate open-source ZATCA app, and for SAP Business One you should check with the vendor or a partner.
People: each needs a partner or skilled staff, with different skills: Python and PostgreSQL for Odoo, Python, JavaScript and Frappe for ERPNext, and the SAP partner network for Business One.
Decision: match the product to your country, your partner options and your appetite for self-hosting.

Licensing and openness
Odoo is open core. Community is free software under the LGPL v3, and Enterprise is built on it under the Odoo Enterprise Edition License, which needs a subscription for the right number of users. The details are in Odoo Community vs Enterprise.
ERPNext is published under the GPL-3.0 on GitHub, and its website says no features are hidden behind paywalls. SAP Business One is commercial software used under licence terms agreed through a partner. SAP's licence guide for version 10.0 describes a named-user model, and current types and prices are best confirmed with SAP or a partner.
Odoo vs ERPNext: modularity and customisation
Both are web-based, written mainly in Python, and open source at their core. Odoo ships a wide catalogue of apps, including a website builder, eCommerce, marketing, events, eLearning and helpdesk, although several are Enterprise-only. ERPNext lists accounting, procurement, sales, CRM, stock, manufacturing, projects, assets, point of sale, quality and support, with HR and payroll in a separate Frappe HR product.
Customisation works differently. In Odoo, developers write modules in Python and XML, and Studio, an Enterprise tool, lets non-developers add fields, views and automation. ERPNext sits on the Frappe framework, where data models called DocTypes can be created from the interface and extended with custom apps in Python and JavaScript. Odoo has a large add-on market, with the Odoo Apps Store and sites such as DevMarket. A broader catalogue is not automatically better: judge each product on the processes you will actually run.
Odoo vs SAP Business One: scale, ecosystem and cost model
SAP positions Business One for small and midsize businesses. Its learning site says it can be hosted on your own servers or in the cloud, works with SAP HANA or Microsoft SQL Server, and is supported by more than 850 local partners, with 28 languages and 50 country-specific versions. The SAP page does not name those versions, so check yours.
Odoo's pricing page sends companies to different implementation routes by size: Success Packs below 50 employees, partners from 50, and Odoo itself from 250. ERPNext's pages do not state a size target, so ask its partners for references of your size.
The cost models differ too. Odoo publishes per-user plans, which makes a first estimate easy, as how much Odoo costs shows. For Business One you ask a partner for a quote that bundles licences, implementation and support. Neither is better in itself, but it means you should compare written quotes for the same scope rather than list prices. A company whose parent group already runs SAP may value the shared vendor and governance, while others may prefer Odoo's lighter start and choice of hosting.
A phase 2 integration module with sandbox, simulation and production modes, per the documentation
A free open-source app, KSA Compliance, is listed on the Frappe Cloud marketplace for ERPNext versions 15 and 16
Check with SAP or a partner
A module existing is not the same as your company being compliant in its wave. Ask each vendor or partner for a live Saudi customer you can talk to.
Which one fits which company?
Company type
Worth shortlisting
Why
Small team with technical skills and a tight budget
ERPNext, or Odoo Community on your own server
No software licence fee, and you control hosting
Growing company that wants sales, stock, accounting and a website in one system
Odoo
A wide app catalogue and a choice of hosting
Group that already runs SAP at headquarters
SAP Business One
Shared vendor and governance, with a local SAP partner
Gulf company that must issue ZATCA e-invoices soon
Whichever has a local partner with live Saudi customers
Compliance depends on the partner's experience
Manufacturer or distributor with complex stock
All three, tested with your own bills of materials
Depth varies by process, so demos must use your data
Company expecting heavy customisation
Weigh the upkeep cost in each
Custom work must be maintained and upgraded in any of them
How do you compare them in practice?
Write ten real scenarios, such as a quotation with a discount, a partial delivery or a supplier return.
Ask each vendor or partner to demonstrate them with your data, not their sample company.
Request written quotes for the same scope, with exclusions listed.
Ask for references from companies of your size and country.
Check the exit. Ask how you would export your data, and who can maintain the system if the partner changes.
Weigh migration risk. Odoo's upgrade service does not cover moving from another ERP, so a later switch between products is a project in its own right.
Frequently asked questions
Is ERPNext better than Odoo?
Neither is better in general. ERPNext's software is free and Frappe Cloud is priced by use, while Odoo has a free edition, per-user plans for the paid one and a wide app catalogue. Test both against your own scenarios.
Is Odoo cheaper than SAP Business One?
It depends on scope, users and partner. Odoo publishes its plans, while Business One is typically quoted through partners, so compare written quotes for the same scope over several years.
Which is best for Saudi Arabia?
None can be named without your details. Check each vendor's current ZATCA support, your wave and a local partner's references.
Can small businesses use SAP Business One?
SAP positions it for small and midsize businesses. Whether it fits your budget is a question for a partner quote.
Is Odoo open source?
Odoo Community is open source under the LGPL v3. Enterprise is shared source under a proprietary licence.
Compare the three Odoo hosting options from Odoo documentation: what each allows, who runs what, which editions fit, where data sits, what costs to expect and how to move between them.
An Odoo implementation is a project, not an installation. Follow the phases from scope to go-live, see who does what, decide between a partner and doing it yourself, and use a go-live checklist.
Odoo Studio changes Odoo without code; custom modules add code. See what each can do, which edition and hosting allow them, what upgrades mean for both, and how to decide by need.
