Payment Gateways in Saudi Arabia: How to Choose One for Your Store
On this page

Payment gateways in Saudi Arabia are the services that let your online store take a customer's payment and pass the result back to your order system. Saudi shoppers expect mada, cards and Apple Pay, many also use STC Pay or buy now pay later, and some still prefer cash on delivery. This guide explains the methods, the kinds of provider, the well-known companies that serve the Kingdom, what to compare and how SAMA fits in, as of October 2026. We do not quote fees or rank providers: confirm current terms with each company.

In short

  • Start with mada, Visa and Mastercard and Apple Pay, then add STC Pay, buy now pay later and cash on delivery as your product needs.
  • A gateway, a payment service provider and a buy now pay later company are different things. Ask who processes the payment, who holds the money and who pays you.
  • SAMA licenses payment service providers. Ask any provider for its licence details and confirm them with SAMA.
  • Compare methods, settlement time, fee structure, refunds, platform support, Arabic support and onboarding documents, and get fees in writing.

Which payment methods do customers in Saudi Arabia use?

Offer the methods your customers already trust, and check each one with the provider you choose, because support varies.

MethodWhat it isWhat to check
madaSaudi Arabia's national debit card network, owned by SAMASAMA's circular on online mada payments says domestic e-store transactions go through the national mada system after testing and approval, so pick a provider connected to it
Visa, Mastercard and other cardsInternational card networksWhich brands are included, for example American Express, and 3-D Secure support
Apple PayA wallet on Apple devices. Apple lists Saudi Arabia as a supported marketCustomers need an eligible card from a participating issuer, and your provider must enable it
STC PayA mobile wallet from Saudi Digital Payments Company, part of stc GroupIt is an e-money account, not a bank account. Use a provider that lists it, or ask STC Pay about its merchant terms
SADADSAMA's national bill presentment and payment systemIt is used to pay invoices through bank channels. Ask your provider whether it supports SADAD for stores
Bank transferA manual payment into your accountYou reconcile by hand. The Ministry of Commerce warns shoppers against transfers to personal accounts, so use a business account
Buy now pay laterInstalment services such as Tabby and TamaraSeparate approval and terms, and how returns and refunds work
Cash on deliveryThe customer pays the courierIt is not a gateway. Check when and how the courier pays you: see shipping and cash on delivery in Saudi Arabia

What is the difference between a gateway, an aggregator and an acquirer?

These words are often mixed up, and the difference decides who you sign with.

  • A payment gateway is the technology that carries card or wallet details securely from your checkout to the payment network and returns an approval or a decline.
  • A payment service provider or aggregator lets many merchants accept payments through its own arrangements and usually settles to you. It often bundles a gateway, fraud checks and a dashboard.
  • An acquirer is the bank or licensed institution that holds the relationship with the card networks. Checkout.com's documentation says that to process mada cards within Saudi Arabia you must first obtain a merchant ID from a Saudi acquirer, so a global gateway alone is not always enough.

The role of SAMA

The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) licenses and supervises payment services. Article 4 of the Law of Payments and Payment Services says that a person may not operate a payment system or provide payment services in the Kingdom unless licensed by SAMA. SAMA also owns the national mada and SADAD systems.

A July 2024 SAMA circular draws a line inside e-commerce payments. Providers that only link stores to payment services and give technical support do not currently need a SAMA licence, but they need technical permits from Saudi Payments. They may not contract directly with merchants, register or verify them, or finalise settlement into a merchant's bank account. The circular implies that the company which signs you up and settles to you is a bank or a licensed payment company. It sets duties for banks and providers rather than merchants, so ask SAMA or a lawyer what it means for you.

Well-known payment gateways in Saudi Arabia

The list is alphabetical, not a ranking, and it is not complete. Each entry says what the company states on its own site or documentation, read in October 2026. It does not mean we have tested the service. Licences and terms change, so ask each company for current details.

  • Amazon Payment Services. Its mada page describes accepting mada in Saudi Arabia, and its documentation lists Apple Pay and STC Pay for the Kingdom. Odoo 19's documentation lists it among bundled online payment providers.
  • Checkout.com. A global provider whose documentation covers mada and lists stc pay, Tabby and Tamara among its methods. See the acquirer point above.
  • HyperPay. A gateway headquartered in Riyadh. Its site announces a licence from the Saudi Central Bank, and its WooCommerce plugin lists cards, mada and STC Pay for existing HyperPay customers.
  • Moyasar. A Saudi company that says it is licensed by SAMA. It lists mada, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay and STC Pay, and publishes a WooCommerce plugin.
  • PayTabs. Its support article for the WooCommerce plugin lists mada and STC Pay for Saudi Arabia. We could not confirm its licence status, so ask it directly.
  • STC Pay. The wallet itself. STC Pay publishes terms for merchants who accept it, so confirm the current terms with the company.
  • Tabby. A buy now pay later service whose support pages say it is active in Saudi Arabia.
  • Tamara. A Saudi buy now pay later company. Its site for merchants targets Saudi Arabia, and it announces a consumer finance licence from SAMA.
  • Tap Payments. Its Saudi page says it is a licensed payment institution and technology provider with mada gateway certification, and lists mada, Apple Pay, cards, Tabby and Tamara.

What to compare

FactorWhat to ask
Supported methodsmada, cards, Apple Pay, STC Pay and buy now pay later: live in Saudi Arabia, not just listed
SettlementHow many days until money reaches your business bank account
Fee structureWhich charges apply: per transaction, set-up, monthly, refund, chargeback, payout. Get the schedule in writing
CurrencySettlement in riyals, and what happens with other currencies
Refunds and chargebacksFull and partial refunds from your admin, dispute process, evidence deadlines
Capture rulesCheckout.com's documentation says mada payments must be captured in full, with no partial capture
IntegrationA maintained plugin or module for your platform and version
SupportArabic support, hours and response time
OnboardingThe exact document list and approval time

For onboarding, expect to need your business registration documents, owner identification and a business bank account, since the Ministry of Commerce ties store verification to a commercial bank account. Ask each provider for its own list before you apply.

Platform support

Shopify's help-centre list of countries for Shopify Payments, checked in October 2026, includes the United Arab Emirates but not Saudi Arabia, so a Saudi store uses a third-party provider that supports Shopify. WooPayments is listed for other countries, so on WooCommerce you install a provider's plugin. Odoo 19 bundles several providers, and for others you look for the provider's own module, or one on the Odoo Apps store that supports your version. Our comparison of Odoo, WooCommerce or Shopify covers the wider choice.

Decision checklist

  1. List the payment methods your customers expect, and rank them by importance.
  2. Shortlist providers that support all of the top three on your platform and version.
  3. Ask each one who the licensed party is, who contracts with you and who settles to you.
  4. Request the fee schedule, settlement time and refund and chargeback rules in writing.
  5. Collect the onboarding document list and check you can supply it.
  6. Run a test checkout in test mode, then a live order and a refund.
  7. Check Arabic support and the checkout in Arabic on a phone.
  8. Make sure payments appear correctly in your accounting, including VAT, so invoices match: see ZATCA e-invoicing phase 2 for online stores.
  9. Add a second method or provider only after the first one runs smoothly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a payment gateway if I only take cash on delivery?

No gateway is needed for cash on delivery, but you handle cash, failed deliveries and delayed remittance.

Can I accept mada on a Shopify store?

Yes, if you use a third-party provider that supports both mada and Shopify. Check the provider's Shopify page and confirm that the integration is current.

Can I accept mada on WooCommerce?

Yes. Several providers, such as Moyasar and HyperPay, publish WooCommerce plugins that list mada. Check each plugin's last update and compatibility.

Does Odoo 19 support Saudi payment providers?

Odoo 19 bundles a list of providers that includes Amazon Payment Services. For other Saudi providers, look for the provider's own module or a third-party module made for Odoo 19.

Should I offer buy now pay later?

Add it after your core methods work. It is a separate agreement, so compare its terms and its refund handling.
