Taqnix Backend Theme documentation

A step-by-step guide for everyone: install the module, use the launcher, switch to dark mode, restyle Odoo with the Theme Studio, and work comfortably on a phone or in Arabic. Developers will find a short chapter on the fields, bundles and CSS variables.

Documents version 2.0.0Updated Oct 22, 2026

Start here

In plain words: Taqnix Backend Theme changes how the Odoo 19 backend looks and feels: a real dark mode, a full-screen app launcher, a sidebar, a phone-friendly bottom bar, and your brand colors everywhere. It does not change what Odoo does: your data, apps and workflows stay exactly as they are.

Tip: Nothing to configure to start: install it and the backend is restyled with the default Taqnix Violet palette. Everything else is optional.

Requirements and compatibility

ItemDetails
Odoo version19.0
EditionCommunity. Odoo Enterprise has its own home menu and dark mode, so this theme is not for Enterprise.
Depends onOnly Odoo's own web and base_setup modules.
BrowsersCurrent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers and phones.
LanguagesAll Odoo languages, including right-to-left ones.
Multi-companyYes: one theme per company.
What it stylesThe backend only. The website, the customer portal and PDF reports keep their own look.
FontsThe default font stack loads nothing from the internet. Choosing a Google font loads it from fonts.googleapis.com.
LicenseOPL-1 (Odoo Proprietary License v1.0).

Install the module

In plain words: You copy one folder to your Odoo server and install it from the Apps screen, like any other module.

If you host Odoo yourself

  1. Unzip the package you downloaded. Inside is taqnix_backend_theme.zip. Unzip it: you get a folder named taqnix_backend_theme.
  2. Copy that folder into one of your Odoo addons paths (the folders listed as addons_path in your odoo.conf), for example /opt/odoo/custom-addons/.
  3. Restart Odoo so it sees the new module.
  4. Log in as an administrator, switch on Developer mode (Settings → Activate the developer mode), open Apps, press Update Apps List and confirm.
  5. Remove the “Apps” filter in the search box, search for Taqnix Backend Theme and press Install.
  6. The page reloads and the backend now has the new look.

From the command line

# install (or update) the module in your database
./odoo-bin -c odoo.conf -d YOUR_DATABASE -i taqnix_backend_theme --stop-after-init
./odoo-bin -c odoo.conf -d YOUR_DATABASE -u taqnix_backend_theme --stop-after-init   # after a new version

Docker, Odoo.sh and others

Put the taqnix_backend_theme folder in the directory you mount or deploy as custom addons, restart, update the apps list and install, as above. Odoo.sh: add the folder to your repository and push.

Important: Install on a copy of your database first if you can, and keep a backup. The theme only adds fields to companies and users (colors and appearance); it removes nothing.
Tip: After installing or updating, do a hard refresh in the browser (Ctrl+Shift+R, or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac) so the new styles load.

The app launcher, sidebar and top bar

In plain words: When you open Odoo you land on a full-screen grid of all your apps. Click an app, or just start typing to search.

The launcher with the default Aurora background.
  1. Open it any time with Alt+H or by clicking the grid icon at the top left. Esc closes it.
  2. Type a few letters: apps and menu items are searched together, with the path shown under each result (for example Sales / Configuration).
  3. Move with the arrow keys and press Enter. Ctrl-click (or Cmd-click) opens an app in a new tab.
Searching “sale” finds the apps, then every menu with its path.

Sidebar

Inside an app, a slim sidebar on the left switches apps with one click. The three-line button at the top expands it to show names; Odoo remembers your choice on that computer.

Prefer the classic layout? Choose Top bar only in the Theme Studio or in Settings → Theme and the sidebar disappears.

Dark mode

In plain words: Each person chooses how they like Odoo: Light, Dark, or Follow device (switches with the computer or phone, day and night).
  1. Click the sun or moon icon in the top bar.
  2. Choose Light, Dark or Follow device under Appearance. It applies at once and is remembered for your user.
  3. On a phone, open More in the bottom bar to find the same switch.

It is real dark mode, not a color filter. The theme supplies the dark palette that Odoo's own dark stylesheets expect, so modules that ship dark styles look right too.

Theme Studio: make it yours

In plain words: The Theme Studio is a panel that slides in from the right. You change things and the real backend behind it updates instantly. Nothing is saved until you press Save theme.
  1. Click the sun or moon icon in the top bar and choose Customize theme (administrators only).
  2. Pick a palette, or set the colors yourself.
  3. Look at the backend behind the panel: it already shows your choice.
  4. Press Save theme to apply it for everyone in this company, or Discard to go back.

Palettes

17 ready-made palettes: Taqnix Violet, Odoo Aubergine, Deep Ocean, Forest, Nord, Midnight Teal, Graphite Lime, Royal Gold, Slate Ruby, Carbon Orange, Rose Mocha, Emerald City, Corporate Grey, Sandstone, Cherry Blossom, Dracula and High Contrast. A palette sets the two colors and the navigation style; you can fine-tune any of them afterwards.

  • Only administrators see this page and the Customize theme entry.
  • Press Save at the top, as on any Odoo settings page.

Several companies

Colors, navigation style, fonts, background and the default appearance are stored per company. Each company can have its own brand. The theme shown depends on the company that is active in the top-right company switcher. Changes apply without rebuilding assets and without a flash of the old colors.

Tip: To brand a second company, switch to it with the company switcher, then open the Theme Studio or Settings → Theme.

On a phone

  • The bar steps aside while you type and in screens that bring their own bar, like Discuss.
  • Notched phones get safe-area spacing, and the browser toolbar takes the top bar's color.
  • Forms and HTML fields never scroll sideways.
  • You can turn the bottom bar off in the Studio or in Settings → Theme.

Arabic and right-to-left languages

Switch a user's language to Arabic, Hebrew or Persian and the whole interface mirrors: the sidebar moves to the right, menus, kanban columns and forms flip. The choice of fonts includes Cairo, Tajawal and IBM Plex Sans Arabic.

For developers

In plain words: Skip this chapter if you only use the theme. It explains where things live, in case you want to adjust or extend them.

What the module adds

WhereWhat
res.companyFields tx_primary_color, tx_secondary_color, tx_nav_style, tx_nav_color, tx_font, tx_radius, tx_density, tx_layout, tx_bottom_nav, tx_background, tx_workspace_background, tx_default_scheme and more. Colors are validated as 6-digit hex.
res.userstx_color_scheme (company default, light, dark or follow device). Users may edit it on their own record.
ir.httpcolor_scheme() returns light or dark so Odoo loads its own dark asset bundles; session_info carries the theme to the browser.
AssetsLight palette in web.assets_backend; dark palette in web.assets_web_dark; pivot and graph styles in the lazy bundles.
JavaScriptAn OWL service tx_theme plus the launcher, sidebar, bottom bar, studio and appearance menu components.

CSS variables

At run time the theme sets design tokens on :root that you can use or override in your own module:

:root {
  --tx-primary: #6B3FE0;        /* brand color                      */
  --tx-primary-hover: ...;       /* hover / active shades            */
  --tx-secondary: #14B8A6;      /* sidebar highlight, badges        */
  --tx-on-primary: #fff; /* readable text on the brand color */
}

/* in your own module's scss */
.my-card { border-color: var(--tx-primary-subtle-border); }

Read the colors from another app

A public endpoint returns the brand colors of the current company, handy for a companion mobile app (only public branding data is returned):

curl https://your-odoo.example.com/api/taqnix/theme_colors

Change a company's theme from code

company = env.company
company.write({
    'tx_primary_color': '#0B6BCB',
    'tx_secondary_color': '#38BDF8',
    'tx_nav_style': 'midnight',
    'tx_default_scheme': 'dark',
})

Settings apply on the next page load; no asset rebuild is needed.

Updating and removing

Updating

Replace the module folder with the new one, restart Odoo and run -u taqnix_backend_theme (or press Upgrade on the module in Apps). Then hard-refresh your browser. Your colors and users' appearance choices are kept.

Coming from version 1

Version 1 stored its colors as system parameters. On installation the module copies them (primary color, accent color and navigation color) to every company automatically.

Removing

Uninstall Taqnix Backend Theme from Apps. Odoo's standard look returns immediately. Dark mode switches off with it, because Odoo's Community edition only turns it on through this module.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
The backend looks unchanged after installingHard-refresh the browser. If you use a reverse proxy or CDN that caches /web/assets, clear that cache.
Styles look broken or half-appliedUpdate the module (-u taqnix_backend_theme) and clear the browser cache. In Developer mode, Settings → Technical → Attachments: delete the web.assets_* files; Odoo rebuilds them.
I cannot find Customize themeIt is for administrators. Log in as an administrator, or ask one to open Settings → Theme.
Dark mode does not follow my deviceChoose Follow device under Appearance. It reads your browser's setting and remembers it in a cookie.
Another theme or backend module looks wrongTwo themes cannot both restyle the backend. Uninstall the other theme. Custom modules with fixed colors may need their own dark-mode styles.
The launcher does not open on loginIt opens when you land on Odoo's home. Pressing Alt+H opens it from anywhere.
Enterprise editionNot supported: Enterprise ships its own home menu and dark mode.
Google font does not loadThe server of the user's browser must reach fonts.googleapis.com. Use System UI, or a custom font from your own https address.

Support
