Best Shopify Apps: What Your Store Needs, Job by Job

There is no honest ranking of the best Shopify apps. Choose by job, check the Built for Shopify badge, reviews, permissions, speed and uninstall behaviour, keep the stack lean, and use a starter stack by store stage.

Best Shopify Apps: What Your Store Needs, Job by Job
On this page

The best Shopify apps are the ones that do a job your store really has, from a developer who keeps them updated, and that you can remove cleanly when they stop earning their place. There is no honest ranking: a store selling subscriptions, one selling custom prints and one dropshipping gadgets need different tools. This guide organises apps by job, names a few long-listed examples for each, and shows how to judge any app before you install it, as of October 2026.

In short

  • Choose by job, not by popularity. Write down what the store must do, then add one app per job.
  • Check the Built for Shopify badge, the reviews and their dates, the permissions requested, the pricing model, the support route and what the app leaves behind when you uninstall it.
  • Every feature you add can affect speed. Install one app at a time, measure, and remove what you do not use.
  • In the Gulf, check subscriptions, local currencies, SMS and couriers against your payment provider and country before you commit.

Start with jobs, not with a list of the best Shopify apps

Shopify already does more than many new merchants expect. It reports on sales, generates your sitemap, robots.txt file and canonical tags, lets you edit page titles and meta descriptions, and covers stock counts, transfers and purchase orders. It also publishes its own apps for messaging, translation, bundles, subscriptions and automation. Add an app when a job is missing or the built-in version does not fit. Shopify's help centre says each feature you add can affect your store's web performance, and every app is one more thing to review, update and eventually remove.

Three stacked layers, one above the other, each a little wider than the one above
Think in layers: what Shopify already does, then one app for each job you can name, then only the extras you have tested.

Which app for which job?

The examples are apps with long-running listings on the Shopify App Store, as of October 2026. The year is the launch date on each listing, and apps made by Shopify are marked, some of them newer. This is not a ranking: other good apps exist, some of these will not suit your country, and listings change. Read the recent reviews and compare with an alternative.

Notes for the Gulf. Shopify lists the gateways that work with subscription apps: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen and Stripe, depending on region. It warns that local, manual or non-credit-card methods might not be available, and cash on delivery is a manual method. Shopify Payments is listed for the UAE but not for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain or Oman, so read Shopify payments in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf.

Only stores with Shopify Payments or Adyen as the primary gateway can charge in a customer's local currency. With other providers, local prices are display only. SMS in Shopify Messaging is available to select regions. The Aramex listing says checkout rates need the Carrier Service API feature, so compare reviews and read shipping and cash on delivery. ReConvert's listing says checkout placement is for Shopify Plus only. For Arabic, see how to build an Arabic Shopify store.

Apps also come and go. Shopify's help centre says Stocky, its inventory app, was no longer available as of 31 August 2026 and its history did not carry over. Ask what happens to your data if a vendor stops.

How to evaluate any Shopify app

Shopify's finding and choosing apps page gives a pre-install list: compatibility, the Built for Shopify badge, ratings and reviews, the pricing model, data permissions, the privacy policy, theme compatibility and an uninstall plan. In practice:

The Built for Shopify badge

Shopify says the badge marks apps that passed its testing for performance (no more than 10 performance points off your storefront speed), design and integration. It reviews the status every year, and an app that stops meeting the requirements loses it. The developer documentation adds proven usefulness, judged on installs, reviews and rating, and you can filter App Store results to badged apps.

It is a shortcut, not a rule. When we opened the listings above in October 2026, Judge.me, Loox, Smart SEO, Plug in SEO, AfterShip, Frequently Bought Together, Smile and Amp showed the badge, and the others did not show it. A missing badge is a reason to look harder, not to walk away.

Reviews, recency and support

Shopify says ratings are weighted averages that favour timely, relevant reviews, and each review shows the reviewer's country or region and how long the app was installed. Sort by newest, read the low ratings for patterns such as billing or broken syncs, and look for developer replies. Check the documentation and the support channel too.

Permissions and privacy

Apps can ask for recent orders (the last 60 days) or all orders. Ask whether the app needs what it requests, and read the privacy policy linked on the listing. After an uninstall, Shopify asks the developer to erase personal information but does not confirm it, so check with the developer.

Pricing model and uninstalling

This guide does not compare prices, but the model matters. Shopify says apps may charge a recurring fee, a one-time fee or usage-based charges. Check whether charges grow with orders, contacts or messages. Uninstalling cancels future recurring charges, but you may still pay for the current cycle, and charges an app bills outside Shopify must be cancelled with the developer.

Shopify's uninstalling apps page adds that some apps add theme code that is not removed automatically, some hold data you cannot recover, and reinstalling may not restore your settings. Ask before you install.

Do not stack apps

There is no magic number: a store with six heavy apps can be slower than one with fifteen light ones. But each app is code that can load on your storefront, a vendor that holds data and a cost. Shopify's App Store requirements say an app should not reduce Lighthouse performance scores by more than 10 points, so treat that as a ceiling and measure your own store.

  • Install one app at a time on a duplicate of your live theme, test a checkout, then measure speed. Shopify's speed report marks app installations against your scores.
  • Keep one app per job. Two review widgets or two pop-up tools clash.
  • Uninstall what you stop using through Settings > Apps, then look for leftover code in the theme.
  • Once a quarter, ask of every app which job it does.

Our guide to speeding up your Shopify store shows how to measure the effect.

Frequently asked questions

How many Shopify apps is too many?

There is no fixed number. Judge each app by the job it does and what it adds to your pages. If you cannot name the job, test the store without it on a duplicate theme and remove it if nothing changes.

Do I need a Built for Shopify app?

No. The badge is a quality signal, and several established apps do not show it. Use it beside reviews, permissions, speed and support.

Are apps from outside the App Store safe?

Shopify says an install link from outside the App Store shows a warning, because the app has not been through its verification and approval. That does not make it unsafe, but you lose the reviews and the vetting.
