WooCommerce Cart Abandonment: How to Reduce It and Win Carts Back
On this page

WooCommerce cart abandonment happens when a shopper adds products to the cart or starts checkout and leaves without paying. Commonly cited reasons are costs that appear late, a forced account, a long form, too few payment methods, slow pages and doubts about the store. Most can be checked in your WooCommerce settings in an afternoon, and recovery emails are a second line of defence. Menu paths were checked against the WooCommerce documentation as of October 2026; labels can differ in older versions.

In short

  • Buyers commonly leave over surprise costs, forced accounts, long forms, limited payment options, slow pages and low trust. Some are only browsing, so aim to remove avoidable reasons, not to reach zero.
  • Fix checkout first: show shipping and tax early, allow guest checkout, hide fields you do not need and offer the payment methods your customers expect.
  • WooCommerce sends no abandoned-cart emails by itself. Decide on consent and privacy before you add a tool that does.
  • WooCommerce Analytics has no abandoned-cart report, so measure the steps before the order in your analytics tool.

What causes WooCommerce cart abandonment?

WooCommerce's own guide to customising checkout ties abandonment to long or confusing checkouts, forced account creation and unexpected costs. The Baymard Institute's published list of reasons, from a survey of US online shoppers, adds slow delivery, doubts about the site, errors, an unsatisfactory returns policy, declined cards and too few payment methods. These are commonly cited reasons, not measurements of your store.

Find where shoppers leave, fix the biggest cause first, then use recovery emails for the carts that remain.

Show shipping and tax before the last step

Costs that appear only on the final step are a commonly cited surprise. Under WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping, the Calculations group has "Enable the shipping calculator on the cart page", "Hide shipping costs until an address is entered" and "Hide shipping rates when free shipping is available". WooCommerce's troubleshooting guide names the second as the box to uncheck when customers do not see shipping costs. Then add a product in a private window and check what a stranger sees on the cart before typing an address.

Under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax, "Display prices in the shop" and "Display prices during cart and checkout" choose Including tax or Excluding tax. If your tax table varies by location, customers must enter an address before WooCommerce can calculate tax, so say on product pages when tax is added later. For Saudi consumers, our VAT guide explains why prices are normally expected to include VAT, and WooCommerce tax and VAT setup shows the settings.

The Free shipping method of a zone can require "A minimum order amount", so state that amount where shoppers can see it. The Free Shipping Progress Bar for WooCommerce plugin on DevMarket shows how much more to spend in the cart, checkout and mini cart, and its listing says it can read the minimum from the zone's Free shipping method. For zones, see WooCommerce shipping setup. Show any cash on delivery fee before confirmation, as the Saudi shipping guide explains.

Shorten checkout: guest checkout and fewer fields

Guest checkout and form fields

Under WooCommerce > Settings > Accounts & Privacy, "Enable guest checkout" lets shoppers buy without an account, although subscriptions still require one. Account creation "After checkout" invites registration once the order is placed.

In the Checkout block, the Address Fields setting of the Checkout Fields block toggles Company, Address Line 2 and Phone, and sets whether address and phone are required. The older shortcode checkout uses Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Checkout for the same three fields. Remove only what you do not use: WooCommerce's developer documentation discourages removing fields, and the country decides which others appear. For Saudi deliveries, our shipping guide suggests asking for a mobile number and the National Address, so keep the phone field.

Express payments and a Buy Now shortcut

An Express Checkout block appears when an express payment method such as WooPay or Apple Pay is active. For single-product purchases, the Buy Now Button for WooCommerce plugin adds a button beside Add to Cart that goes straight to checkout, skipping the cart page, for simple and variable products. That also skips the cart's cross-sells and quantity review, so test it on a few products first.

Payment methods, trust and speed

Payments. Place a test order with every method under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments: a missing method and a declined card are both commonly cited reasons for leaving. Our WooCommerce payment gateways guide explains the options, and payment gateways in Saudi Arabia what is available in the Kingdom.

Trust. WooCommerce creates a Refund and Returns Policy page as an unpublished draft with sample text, which its documentation calls optional but strongly recommended. Edit it to match your real rules, publish it, and set your Terms and Conditions page under WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced. Show who runs the store: our guide to starting an online store in Saudi Arabia lists the details and policy pages expected there.

Speed. Cart and checkout pages cannot be page-cached, so test them on a phone, using our speed guide.

How do abandoned-cart recovery emails work?

WooCommerce's default emails (WooCommerce > Settings > Emails) include no abandoned-cart email, so you need an extension or an email tool. The flow is similar across tools:

  1. The tool captures an email address from a logged-in customer, or from a guest who typed it at checkout.
  2. After a set time without activity the cart counts as abandoned. AutomateWoo's documentation gives 15 minutes as its default.
  3. One or more reminders show the cart and link back to it, sometimes with a coupon.
  4. The sequence stops when the customer orders or returns.

Check capture on your checkout type: the same AutomateWoo page says the block checkout captures only the billing email and name, while the classic checkout can capture more. Make any coupon single use and short-lived (see our coupons guide).

Cart Abandonment Recovery for WooCommerce on DevMarket sends one to three reminders with delays you set, each with a return link, and can add a personal coupon to the last. Its listing says guests give permission through a checkbox (or you track only logged-in customers), every email has an unsubscribe link, records are deleted after a number of days you choose, and both checkout types work. It does not claim legal compliance.

Privacy and consent

A shopper's email address and cart contents are personal data in the ordinary sense, so privacy law applies to how you collect, use and keep them. If you sell to people in the EU, ask whether the GDPR applies to you: the European Commission's pages for businesses are a starting point. Saudi Arabia has its own Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL), supervised by SDAIA, which describes it on its National Data Governance Platform. Rules on marketing messages and consent differ by country and can change, so ask your data-protection authority and a lawyer whether a reminder to a guest needs prior consent. This is not legal advice.

Whatever the answer, say in your privacy policy what you collect and why, include an unsubscribe link, delete old data and send few reminders.

How do you measure cart abandonment?

WooCommerce records an order only when a customer reaches the final step. Its documentation says a Draft order is created when a block checkout customer clicks Place Order (it shows only on the Draft sub-tab of the Orders page), Pending payment means no payment was made, and Failed means a payment failed or was declined. These show unfinished checkouts, not carts abandoned earlier. The Analytics documentation lists Categories, Coupons, Customers, Downloads, Orders, Order attribution, Products, Variations, Revenue, Stock and Taxes reports, and no abandoned-cart report.

For earlier steps, use your analytics tool. Google Analytics 4 documents recommended ecommerce events including view_item, add_to_cart, view_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info and purchase, and a funnel exploration shows how many users reach each step, with breakdowns such as device category. The Google Analytics for WooCommerce plugin lists events such as view_item, add_to_cart and purchase, so check which checkout events your setup sends, and respect the consent rules for analytics where you sell. Use one definition of "abandoned" and change one thing at a time.

A prioritised action list

First test like a customer: on a phone, in a private window, as a guest, with each payment method, through to the confirmation email. Note every moment you hesitated, then work down the list.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good cart abandonment rate for WooCommerce?

There is no single good number: price, traffic source, device and your definition of "abandoned" all change it. Compare your own store week by week, and be wary of any figure quoted without its source and method.

Do I need a plugin to send abandoned-cart emails?

Yes, or an email tool. WooCommerce's default emails do not include one, and its documentation covers abandoned carts in extensions such as AutomateWoo.

Should I force customers to create an account?

Not unless your products need one. WooCommerce's checkout guide says so, and subscription purchases do need an account.

It depends on the country, how the address was captured and how the message is worded. Ask your data-protection authority and a lawyer.
