Odoo eCommerce: How to Build an Online Store with Odoo Website
On this page

Odoo eCommerce is the online shop app of Odoo, and it runs on the Website app, which builds the pages around it. Because the shop shares one database with inventory, sales, invoicing and contacts, a web order becomes a sales order, a delivery order and an invoice without anyone retyping it. This guide shows how to build an online store with Odoo and where Shopify or WooCommerce may suit you better. Menu paths follow the Odoo 19.0 documentation, and screens may differ in 20.0.

In short

  • Odoo calls eCommerce an open-source platform for building and managing an online store. It builds on the Website app and is part of Community.
  • Orders flow into Sales, Inventory and Invoicing in one database, and website forms can create CRM opportunities.
  • Pricelists handle currencies and customer groups, and payment and delivery are set up under the Website menu.
  • Odoo can run in Arabic. A server you manage needs the rtlcss package for right-to-left layouts.
  • It suits a shop tied to stock and accounting. A hosted-only storefront can be a lighter start.

What are Odoo eCommerce and the Website app?

The Website app is Odoo's website builder, which the documentation describes as a way to build and maintain web pages without advanced technical skills. eCommerce adds the catalogue, product pages, cart, checkout, customer accounts and online payment.

A row of cards joined by arrows from left to right
A web order moves from cart to sales order, delivery and invoice inside one database, without retyping.

Both apps are in Odoo Community, so there is no licence fee, although some tools, such as the website import tool, need Enterprise. See Odoo Community vs Enterprise and Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on-premise.

How does the shop share data with inventory, invoicing and CRM?

In Odoo's documentation the cart is a quotation, a confirmed checkout waiting for payment shows as Quotation Sent, and a paid order becomes a Sales Order. You find them under Website > eCommerce > Orders.

AppWhat the shop does with it
InventoryCreates a delivery order and shows availability on the product page. The Inventory app must be installed
Invoicing or AccountingProduces the invoice, by hand or automatically once payment is registered if you enable Automatic Invoice
CRM and sales teamsAssigns web orders to a sales team or salesperson. A website form can create an opportunity
ContactsCustomers are contact records. With an account they see quotations, orders and invoices under My Account

The guides to Odoo inventory, accounting and CRM cover those apps.

How do products, variants and attributes work?

Create a product with New > Product in the Website app, or under Website > eCommerce > Products, where you can also import XLSX or CSV files. Add a price, taxes, a website category and an image, then switch it to Published. For sizes and colours, enable Product Variants in Website > Configuration > Settings and add attributes on the product's Attributes & Variants tab. An attribute can also work as a shop filter. eCommerce categories organise the catalogue, and a product can sit in several. Optional and alternative products and combos support upselling, and ribbons highlight products.

How do pricelists, currencies and taxes work?

In Website > Configuration > Settings, Display Product Prices shows prices Tax Excluded or Tax Included on each website. Odoo says the choice usually follows the country's rules and your customer type, so ask your accountant and read VAT and invoices for online stores in Saudi Arabia.

Enable Pricelists in the same screen for rules by currency, period, quantity, location or customer type. A pricelist can go to one website, one customer or a country group, or be marked Selectable so visitors choose it. Odoo's price documentation strongly recommends switching Selectable off when you use country groups. For several currencies, create a pricelist per active currency. Odoo's currency page says the Accounting app must be installed to use multiple currencies in Sales, while Community includes Invoicing, so test this in your edition.

How do payment providers connect to Odoo?

Odoo embeds connectors for payment providers. Open an account with the provider and copy its API credentials. Then go to Website > Configuration > Payment Providers, fill in the Credentials tab and set State to Enabled. Odoo recommends trying test mode on a duplicate or test database, to avoid invoice numbering problems. Depending on the provider, you can also refund from Odoo, capture payments manually and offer Google Pay or Apple Pay. Card details stay with the provider. Wire transfer, cash on delivery and pay on site are also available.

The 19.0 provider list includes Stripe, PayPal, Adyen and Amazon Payment Services, but not every provider Saudi stores use. Read payment gateways in Saudi Arabia first, then confirm your provider has a module for your Odoo version. Odoo Online is incompatible with custom and Apps Store modules, so check before you choose it.

How do delivery and checkout work?

Delivery methods and carriers

Under Website > Configuration > Delivery Methods you create custom methods (a fixed price or rules, with Cash on Delivery and tracking links) and Click & Collect from a warehouse. Carrier connectors calculate shipping and create labels. Odoo's connector list names DHL Express, FedEx, UPS and Envia.com for all regions, plus regional carriers, but as read in October 2026 no Saudi courier. For the Saudi side, read shipping and cash on delivery in Saudi Arabia, and test with a real parcel.

Checkout and customer accounts

Checkout runs through Order summary, Address, an optional Extra Info step, Payment and Order confirmation, and the website builder edits each step. You can add a Buy Now button and send abandoned cart reminders. Under Customer Account choose Free sign up or On invitation, and Sign in/up at checkout decides whether guests can check out.

What do the website builder, languages and SEO tools offer?

Builder and themes

The editor uses drag-and-drop building blocks, and the Theme tab sets colours, fonts and layout. Product pages can show a wishlist, comparison and reviews. The theme pages do not say which themes each edition includes, so check in a trial.

Arabic and right-to-left

Install languages under Website > Configuration > Settings, add them to the website, then use Edit > Translate on each page. Odoo warns that untranslated content may hurt user experience and SEO. Odoo can run in Arabic, and its installation documentation says right-to-left languages such as Arabic need the rtlcss package on a server you manage. Test the shop, emails and invoice PDFs on a phone with the right-to-left checklist. Odoo's Saudi Arabia page says Saudi tax invoices must be in Arabic and may be bilingual: confirm yours with your accountant and see Odoo for Saudi Arabia.

SEO

Website > Site > Optimize SEO edits a page's title and description tags. Odoo redirects renamed products with a 301, compresses images to WebP, generates a sitemap and an editable robots.txt, and adds product structured data and hreflang tags. See Odoo's SEO documentation.

How does Odoo compare with Shopify and WooCommerce?

Odoo is strongest when the shop is one channel of a business you already run in Odoo, and a heavier start for a storefront alone. Shopify and WooCommerce can connect to other systems, but you look after the connection. See Odoo, WooCommerce or Shopify for a Gulf store and Shopify vs WooCommerce.

How do you set up your first Odoo online store?

  1. Choose edition and hosting. Avoid Odoo Online if you may need outside modules.
  2. Create a test database with Website, eCommerce, Inventory and Invoicing, and run the website builder.
  3. Set currency and taxes and, in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi localisation.
  4. Review the eCommerce section of Website > Configuration > Settings: variants, pricelists, displayed prices, checkout sign-in and Automatic Invoice.
  5. Add real products with photos and stock, and publish them.
  6. Enable one payment provider in test mode and one delivery method.
  7. Add Arabic and check on a phone.
  8. Place a test order as a guest and follow it to the sales order, delivery order, invoice and emails. Try a refund.
  9. Go live: connect your domain, enable the provider in production, write page titles and register with Google Search Console.

Common mistakes

  • Testing payments in the live database, which can disturb invoice numbering.
  • Choosing Odoo Online, then needing a module it cannot install.
  • Going live before your accountant has checked the invoice format and tax display.
  • Adding custom code for something a setting does: read Odoo Studio vs custom development first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Odoo eCommerce free?

Odoo Community, which includes eCommerce, has no licence fee, but hosting, setup and support cost money, and Enterprise is charged per user. See how much Odoo costs.

Can Odoo eCommerce sell in Arabic and in several currencies?

Yes, with care. Arabic needs translated content and, on your own server, rtlcss. Several currencies need a pricelist each, and the Accounting app according to Odoo's currency page.

Does Odoo eCommerce work for business customers?

Yes. The documentation describes tax-excluded prices, hidden prices, invitation-only accounts and VAT fields at checkout, and recommends separate websites if you sell to both consumers and businesses.

Can I import products from another platform?

Odoo imports products from XLSX or CSV files. Enterprise's website import tool can also rebuild a website and up to 20 products from sites that expose product data in supported formats, and Odoo points to CSV for more.

Next steps
